Polar Opposites

This morning, I had two songs stuck in my head. I alternated between them both, and even with the iPod on random and the volume high enough to block out the sounds of the bus, I was at a loss.

The songs? Blame Canada from South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut and Poor Unfortunate Souls from The Little Mermaid. That makes sense, right?

In case you were wondering, no, I cannot explain it. But how awesome is Ursula, anyway? (Answer: Very awesome.)

To make things worse, let me tell you about the two movies I watched last night. One is a movie Mike has been trying to get me to watch for months, the other is an absolute triumph in modern movie-making with amazing acting and an even better storyline. See if you can guess which is which:

Boondock Saints and Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

So there's that.

I love both of those movies! Boondock Saints...tons of killing. AWESOME. You did not like?

megan - Oh no, I loved Boondock Saints. It was brilliant. I was just making fun of myself for watching the Princess Diaries 2 as it is not exactly a classic.

Boondock was quite good. The acting was phenomenal and throw a few good looking blokes with accents at me and I'm pretty much sold.

I don't agree with Mike that it's one of the best movies ever made, as he also feels about Shawshank. They were both excellent films, but they skew toward the male end of the spectrum. The thing that makes them both superb movies is the acting. The storylines are nothing special, in my opinion.

Wait, wait, wait. Are you saying Shawshank isn't one of the best movies ever? Because it is pretty high up that list.

lem - Perhaps I am taking an unpopular stance, but I wouldn't rank it as high as it is on imdb's rankings (currently #1). Top twenty or thirty, probably, but not number 1.

The acting is absolutely amazing, no doubt. And the story is creative and original. But it just didn't resonate with me. Maybe that's because I saw it years and years after it came out and it was so so hyped that I expected brilliance. I don't know.

Of course it's all about personal preference. But if I were to pick movies that are historically and emotionally significant, I don't think that I would include Shawshank.

Unpopular stance, I know.
